Greater San Antonio has seen tremendous growth over the last decade. CPS Energy has experienced that growth firsthand, ramping up service to thousands of new residential and commercial customers each month. Despite a recent downturn in the national economy and slowing economic conditions locally, it appears San Antonio will continue to experience steady growth .
Today, CPS Energy customers enjoy an affordable and reliable supply of energy. Our customers pay the lowest bills in the country when compared to the 10 largest cities, thanks to our use of a diverse mix of fuel resources including coal, natural gas, nuclear power and renewable energy. This commitment to fuels diversification provides the company with tremendous flexibility to meet the area's energy demands.
More homes and businesses will be a part of San Antonio’s prosperous future. These new customers will demand more energy to meet their daily needs. CPS Energy will closely follow its Strategic Energy Plan to make sure power remains affordable and reliable for our customers for decades to come. Today, as part of this plan, CPS Energy is focused on encouraging energy efficiency and conservation, treating it as the “fifth fuel” in our menu. We also are looking at every opportunity to expand our renewable energy portfolio that includes wind power, solar energy and landfill gas.
However, while energy efficiency and renewable energy are important staples of our fuels diversification plans, Greater San Antonio inevitably will need another major source of electrical generation by 2018. Following many months of in-depth research, it appears nuclear energy is the best long-term option for power production, considering construction costs, environmental regulations and long-term fuel prices. However, we continue to evaluate all our future energy options, and no decisions are expected to be made regarding generation projects until fall 2009.
