Improve the Efficiency of Your Home's Heating and Cooling System

filter and AC
  • Keep room temperature between 78 and 80 degrees during the warmer, summer months. For each degree cooler, costs can increase 7 to 10 percent. During the winter, a thermostat setting of between 68 to 70 degrees is recommended.
  • Consider using a programmable thermostat. Set it at a higher temperature while you’re at work, then program it to be a comfortable temperature when you return home. Try our Peak Saver Thermostat
  • Use ceiling fans to circulate air and make a room feel cooler. Don’t forget to turn off fans when you leave the room!
  • Check your air filter every month, especially during the winter and summer, and replace dirty filters that make your system work harder and waste energy.
  • Have your heating and air conditioning system serviced twice a year (spring and fall, preferably) by a licensed professional.
  • When your air conditioner is on, close exterior doors to keep the heat out and reduce your AC’s running time.
  • If your air conditioner is 10 years or older, replace it with a new, more efficient 15 SEER model. How about an air conditioner rebate?
  • Try ENERGY STAR windows and reduce your energy bill by as much as 15 percent. How about an ENERGY STAR windows rebate?
  • Close window blinds to keep out the summer sun and reduce heat. Raise shades and open curtains during winter to let in the sun's warmth.
  • Install solar screens, solar film or plant trees and shrubs around your home to limit direct sunlight. How about a window film and solar screens rebate? Caulk around window frames and weather-strip doors to prevent air infiltration.
  • Check attic insulation. Poorly insulated attics may lose up to 40 percent of the cool air in a house. How about an attic insulation rebate?
  • Plant a tree near a window for shading to reduce your home's energy consumption. More
